My first brief at BA was a typography brief. Our task was to create our own modular typeface, inspired by visual and contemporary research. Being new to Manchester, I was inspired by the familiar elements of a city, which I highly resonate with, growing up in a metropolis such as Hong Kong. I wanted my typeface to express structure and movement, as well as appearing playful and ambiguous. I titled it ‘Sidestreet’, to pay homage to all the backstreets and hidden gems within a city that truely give it it’s character. The second part of the project was to apply our typeface to a context. I decided to create an animation that depicts the essence of Manchester, using words collected by my fellow peers to emphasize a theme of community.
